A console table is a long, narrow table made to stand against a wall, usually behind a sofa, in an entryway or along a hallway. This collection brings together console tables for the living room and the spaces around it, in different widths, depths, shapes and finishes. For the rest of the room, see our living room furniture.
Where the table stands decides what suits it. Behind a sofa, a console table, often called a sofa table, suits a lamp and a few books without crowding the seats. In an entryway it gives you a place for keys and mail, and along a hallway a slim hallway table takes little of the walkway. Smaller tables that sit beside a sofa or chair serve a different purpose from a console table behind a sofa; for those, see our side and end tables.
Start by measuring the wall width, then check the depth against the floor space left in front. Stand where the table would go and see how much room remains to walk past it, and to pull out a drawer if it has one. The tables here run from about 85 cm to 152 cm wide and from about 31 cm to 45 cm deep. Five are 35 cm deep or less, which suits a tighter hallway, while deeper tables need more floor space in front.
Heights run from about 74 cm to 91 cm, and all but two sit between about 74 cm and 81 cm. The two tallest are also the longest, at about 152 cm wide. If you plan to hang a mirror or picture above the table, compare its listed height with the space under the frame.
Decide what the table needs to hold. A plain top suits a lamp, a bowl or a few frames. Several tables have drawers, from one to three, which are handy for keys, mail and other small items. A few have a lower open shelf for books or baskets, and two have both. If you want a console table with storage, check the photographs to see which arrangement each one has. Overall dimensions do not tell you the inside size of a drawer, so confirm that before ordering if you need to fit larger items.
Shapes and details vary more than the storage. Two tables have half-round tops with a flat back that sits against the wall. One has an elongated oval top on two slab legs. Others have fluted or slatted panels, spindle details, scalloped drawer fronts, carved aprons or turned legs. If you need larger enclosed storage than a slim console table offers, see our sideboard cabinets.
Every console table here lists solid Sheesham wood in its specification. Photographs cannot show a wood species, so rely on the specification on each product page.
Finishes run from dark walnut and brown tones to light natural and honey tones, and include white, soft pink and green bases with natural-toned tops. Two tables are offered in Natural or Walnut, and one comes in light pink or light green, so choose the option on the product page before you order.
What is the difference between a console table, a sofa table and a hall table?
The names overlap. A console table is a long, narrow table meant to stand against a wall. "Sofa table" usually means a console table placed behind a sofa, and "hall table" means one used in a hallway or entryway. Choose by where it will stand and by its width, depth, height and storage, not by its name.
Where should I place a console table in my home?
Common spots are behind a sofa, in an entryway and along a hallway. Behind a sofa, a table narrower than the sofa leaves room at each end and holds a lamp without crowding the seats. In an entryway it keeps keys and mail within reach, and in a hallway a slim table protects the walkway. Whatever the spot, leave room to walk past and to open any drawers fully, and keep the table clear of door swings.
How do I choose the right console table width and depth for a narrow space?
Measure the wall width and the clear floor space in front of it. The console tables here run from about 85 cm to 152 cm wide and about 31 cm to 45 cm deep, and five are 35 cm deep or less. Pick a width that sits comfortably within the wall, and a depth that still leaves a comfortable walking path, remembering that drawers need extra room to pull out. If the space is tight, compare the listed depths first.
Should I choose a console table with drawers, shelves or a plain top?
Choose by what you need to put away. Drawers keep small items out of sight, and an open lower shelf holds books or baskets but leaves them on show. A plain top provides an uncluttered surface, while drawers and shelves offer additional storage. Several tables here have drawers and a few have a lower shelf, while others have plain tops. The listed sizes describe the whole table, not the inside of a drawer, so confirm the usable space if you need to fit larger items.
